INFORMED BY HERITAGE

Smith Street meets Gertrude Street at one of Melbourne’s most distinctive laneway intersections: Little Smith. Set within an industrial fabric that shaped the precinct long before its current life, two four-storey terraced townhouses sit behind a carefully restored heritage retail frontage.

The homes are carefully oriented to capture northern light, opening onto terraces with views to the Yarra and the Melbourne skyline. Recycled heritage brick and box-framed windows reference the precinct’s warehouse character: materials that sit comfortably within the street rather than being imposed upon it.

Each residence unfolds across four levels, comprising three bedrooms, a full-floor master suite, and a dedicated study. Living spaces extend onto terraces, reinforcing a connection to light and outlook. Private car parking and lift access are integrated throughout. The buildings are fully electric, designed to a 7-star energy rating, with EV-ready charging and bike storage incorporated from the outset.

At the front, the restoration of one of Smith Street’s earliest shopfronts is deliberate and considered. It is time-intensive work, undertaken because the building warrants it - and because the strength of the street lies in its continuity.
